MERSEYSIDE'S second-biggest bus operator, Stagecoach, is today reporting a 13% surge in annual profits to pounds 196.4m.

The Scottish transport giant, which also owns a 49% stake in Liverpool-to-London rail operator, Virgin Trains, said the recession had led to a growing demand for bus travel across the UK.
