I think it's the massive amount of immigration, while Liverpool and the likes of Marseilles and Naples have been classed as 'Cities on the edge' which don't have a hinterland beyond them. I think it makes a difference. You are never travelling THROUGH Liverpool, you are going TO Liverpool.
