1837 THE Duke wins the first Grand Liverpool Steeplechase at Maghull. Ridden by Denbighshire-born Mr Henry Potts and owned byMr Sirdefield of the George Inn, Crosby, the gelding won comfortably from just three opponents. Two years later Aintree became the home of the race.

1847 NAMED for the first time this year as the Grand National Handicap Steeplechase, the first Irish-bred winner Matthew was a popular 10/1 favourite.
