I HAD a great response to last week's Lost Tribes column. Chris Evans recalled his father's Everton stables in Roscommon Street where, at various times of the year, exotic animals from local theatre shows and visiting circuses were often housed.

Chris remembered a lion taking residence overnight and also remembered an occasion when an elephant broke loose from the stables to wander the nearby terraced streets. So could this have really happened? Chris's memories did not so much surprise June Woodall as delight her because it ratified a tall story her husband always told her from the 1950s.
