League Leaders Stay On Course for Double

Summary

TABLE TOPPERS 051 stayed on course for a league and cup double when they reached the final of the under-16s Macmil-lan Group Cup. Opponents Home and Bargain currently sit second in the West Derby league under-16s division behind 051, and they had the first chance of the game when Gary Birchall cut the ball back for Steven Jay at the edge of the penalty area, but his shot went just wide of Scott Harper's post. The league leaders created their first chance on 23 minutes when Joey Bligth raced down the right wing and picked out David Foulkes, but David Corner managed to palm his shot away to James Joyce, who headed over the bar. 051 began to dominate possession and two minutes later a long throw-in found Foulkes in the penalty area, but Jack Smith intervened to deny the 051 man.

051 then forced a corner which was half-cleared to Bligth, who whipped in a dangerous cross which found Gary Latham, and the defender coolly finished to put his side 1-0 up. The goal gave 051 added impetus and a minute later Tom Williamsraced down the right wing and delivered an excellent cross to Joyce, but again goalkeeper Corner stood firm. Moments later 051 could have gone further ahead when a loose ball fell to Jay Campbell 25 yards from goal, but the midfielder's powerful drive fizzed wide.
