SCIENTISTS watched in awe today as the greatest sharpshooting show in history took place - 133 million miles away.

Shortly before 7am, a copper and aluminium 'torpedo' the size of a washing machine smashed into the icy surface of a comet as big as a football pitch in a flash of white light. The projectile was fired from the American space agency Nasa's Deep Impact spacecraft into the path of comet Tempel 1, which is hurtling through space at 23,000mph.
