Danny Flies the Flag for Open Days

Summary

IN the fraught world of Merseyside ship preservation, the restoration of the UK's last steampowered tug tender, Daniel Adamson, is a striking success. So deservedly this small vessel is the first ship taking part this Saturday in the UK Heritage Open Days. Truly historic, the "Danny" was built at 1903 in Tranmere for passenger carrying and barge towing linking Ellesmere Port and Liverpool Pier Head. Bought by Manchester Ship Canal, Danny was later its directors' inspection ship and many readers will recall seeing her berthed in Runcorn, with distinctive lime-green upper works. Besides her original steam engines, Danny boasts an amazing art deco two deck saloon, inspired by Cunard's Queen Mary I. Derelict for 20 years, restoration started in 2004. Danny is now in Sandon Dock, off Regent Road. Due to limited space for visitors, booking is essential; call Colin Brogan on tel: 07746 199 844. Sandhill rail station is 10 minutes walk with access via Wellington Dock gate access.

. WELL done to Liverpool Merchant Navy veterans who persuaded the Lord Mayor of London to fly a Red Ensign over Tower Bridge yesterday for Merchant Navy Day.
