City's Housing Policy Is Just a Farce

Summary

THE madness of Liverpool's supposed housing market failure continues to bewilder me. The council expect us to believe that no one wants to live in terraces yet they continue to allow speculators to erect one bedroom 'New York Loft' apartments that due to over supply are being left vacant for long periods of time. While our traditional housing, which is in great demand, and provides excellent value for money in terms of flexibility and square footage, has been termed 'obsolete' by the council's HMRI (Housing Market Renewal Initiative) team. It is an absolute joke.

The hideous council high-rise blocks that were built all over the city during the 50s and 60swerediscredited years ago and the majority have been demolished. Some did survive the bulldozers and are still blighting the cityscape. One such block is Heysmoor Heights on Sefton Park Road. Recently it was cleared of tenants and has been sold to a developer. From the upper floors of the Heights you can see the Welsh Streets terraces, the seare currently being emptied to allow them to be demolished, as government officials have con demned them as being in 'low demand'.
