WHEN we viewed our house in the summer, the central heating system was not switched on. Since we bought it, we have found out that it was not working. The house was advertised as having central heating. Should the seller or the estate agent compensate us?

The basic rule of any house purchase is caveat emptor -- buyer beware. It is not the responsibility of either the seller or the estate agent to bring defects to your attention. What they are required to do is respond truthfully to requests for information.
