Bridget Jones's Diary (Itv2, 10pm)

Summary

EVERYONE'S favourite singleton starts a new year with good intentions about becoming calm, sophisticated and successful, but her plans hit a stumbling block when she falls for her shifty boss and her mother has an affair. Could a seemingly uptight lawyer hold the key to sorting out her chaotic life? Even if you normally have an intolerance of chick flicks, this romantic comedy could just win you over. Despite fears that Renee Zellweger was far too scrawny and American to play the calorie-obsessed, very British Bridget, the actress gamely piled on two stone, perfected her English accent and won all the critics over.

If her charming, vulnerable heroine wasn"t good enough reason to see the film, there"s also the sharp script and strong support from dashing Colin Firth and a Hugh Grant, who proves he"s every bit as good at playing silver-tongued cads as he is at bumbling fops.
