A NEW name, a famous patron, a change of conductor on the horizon and a birthday concert. It's a red-letter weekend for the Merseyside Youth Orchestra, 55 years old, and relishing the latest resounding success of 17-year-old clarinetist Mark Simpson as BBC Young Musician of the Year.

With old boy Sir Simon Rattle, director of the Berlin Philharmonic, agreeing to act as their patron, nothing could be finer than a shindig bringing together nigh on 130 former and present members.
