Time for Research

WHILE researching a reader's family tree I discovered her ancestor was a clockmaker from Prescot. South west Lancashire, and Prescot in particular, was a famous centre for clock/watch makers with their products being renowned for their craftsmanship and accuracy.

Rock of Ages

No. 1 singles from this week, with Jade Wright 1963 The Beatles - She Loves You Paul McCartney and John Lennon were inspired to write She Loves You after a concert at the Majestic Ballroom in Newcastle as part of their tour with Roy Orbison and Gerry & The Pacemakers. "There was a Bobby Rydell song out at the time, Forget Him, and, as often happens, you think of one song when you write another," said Paul. "We were in a van up in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. I'd planned an 'answering song' where a co...

Clean Up Village ; You Say Email:Letters@Liverpoolecho.Co.Uk

WHEN is Sefton council going to send some street cleaners in and around Moor Lane, Crosby? This was once a wonderful clean shopping village but now, thanks to Sefton council or should I say Bootle council, we can no longer say that. With all the bars being allowed to open in this area, the lane is a mess come Monday morning. Today, Monday, somebody had been sick and it had been trodden all around the centre, adjoining Moor Lane and Liverpool Road. Along with cigarette butts and wrappers, the ...

Hurt by Comment ; You Say Email:Letters@Liverpoolecho.Co.Uk

IN reply to an article in the ECHO (Tuesday, September 8) by Keith Carter. I did agree with most things he wrote. However I left school in 1972, I have done hard manual work ever since, including six years in the army.

Dock Needs a Big Draw ; You Say Email:Letters@Liverpoolecho.Co.Uk

I FEEL the Albert Dock will remain the same unless a permanent spectacular event takes place there. This being so spectacular that crowds would flock to see it regularly. Having lived all my 66 years in Liverpool being born in Anfield, I remember as a child rushing to hear the cuckoo sound the time of day on the hour at the ornamental floral clock in Stanley Park, a crowd always gathered.

Our Night Out Was Great ; You Say Email:Letters@Liverpoolecho.Co.Uk

ON Saturday, September 12, a group of 10 of us went to see Our Day Out as part of a birthday treat and what a treat it was. Drew Schofield fell into his part as though it was made for him. Michael Starkey looked as though he enjoyed the show as much as the audience.

Money Making Ploy ; You Say Email:Letters@Liverpoolecho.Co.Uk

I WAS recently pulled over on Parliament Street by the police on a stop check. My documents were in order and as I work in the motor trade and see first hand the damage done by uninsured drivers, I had no problem with the check, until the officer quite clearly said that had the camera van not left the check in area, he would have issued me with a fixed penalty for pounds 60 for, wait for it, a dirty number plate.

Cuts Should Make Politicians Spend More Wisely

THE truth is out. There are going to be not just cuts, but mega cuts in public expenditure over the next few years, whoever wins the General Election. These cuts may well take the proportional level of public expenditure back to that inherited by Labour in 1997. Phew.

ST HELENS centre Matt Gidley is confident his side can halt their late-season slump in time to reach a fourth successive Grand Final. Saints lost their grip on both the Challenge Cup and the Super League leaders' shield after winning just one of their last five matches to raise the prospect of first a trophy-less season for six years.

MANCHESTER CITY manager Mark Hughes admits he finds it "amusing" that his club are getting under the skin of Sir Alex Ferguson. Hughes hopes to add to his former boss's displeasure by winning the bragging rights in the derby on Sunday.

Reo-Coker in Bust Up with O'neill

ASTON VILLA manager Martin O'Neill has demanded all the focus at Villa Park is on today's clash with struggling Portsmouth and not his training ground bust-up with midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker. Reo-Coker was sent home from training yesterday for disciplinary reasons with reports indicating he had a disagreement with O'Neill in training on Thursday.
