IN response to Joe Riley"s comments about the NHS (August 27), no one political party is entitled to claim pro-prietoriarights. It is pertinent to record that, although the NHS was inaugurated by Aneurin Bevan, then Minister of Health in Clement Attlee"s Labour Government, it was the result of a report by Lord Beveridge, published in 1944, which was commissioned by the National Coalition Government.

Flash Back

TALES FROM THE PAST Continued from last week: SAM begged his mum to come and see the 'little green man' in the keyhole but Tessie Kelly stayed put at the dolly tub in the kitchen, taking not a blind bit of notice of her 11- year-old son's ridiculous claims. Sam therefore rushed back into the living room and saw his five-year-old sister Shawney gazing up at the mysterious panel in the wall which the tear in the wallpaper had revealed. There was no little man at the keyhole now, and with a somb...

The Peoples Archive

READER Christine McNally from Liverpool sent in two pictures of her relatives, friends and neighbours on a day out in Blackpool in around 1968. Above are some of the children. Christine is unsure of all of the names but some of them are: Christine herself, Angela McNally, Julie Gilmour Karen Georgeson, Derek McNally, Sandra Hughes, Tony Fields and Patsy McNally. The second picture shows, back row from left: Sheila Fields (nee McNally), Annie Gilmour (nee McNally), Mary Clarke (nee McPoland), ...

Rock of Ages

No. 1 singles from this week, with Jade Wright 1965 Sonny and Cher - I Got You Babe SONNY Bono, a songwriter and record producer for Phil Spector, wrote the song for himself and his wife, Cher, late at night in their basement. Apparently he had been inspired to write the song to capitalise on the popularity of the term "babe," as heard in Bob Dylan's It Ain't Me Babe which was a hit for The Turtles.

War Records

NEXT Thursday, September 3, marks the 70th anniversary of the start of World War II. And with a generation now growing up whose grandparents do not even remember this conflict, there are plenty of other sources where you can discover your ancestors' roles in those dark days of the 1940s. The best place to start is the family photograph album where you may come across someone in a forces' uniform. If you are lucky there will be details on the back. If not then you need to look at for clues. Re...

Aesthetic Objection ; You Say Email:Letters@Liverpoolecho.Co.Uk

DAVID Bartlett's article (August 21) 'Too Much Tesco' is admirably balanced, yet I now think Liverpool has a surplus of them, mainly because they price out small shops, which struggle to survive in this recession and sometimes are meeting places for friends who can't struggle up hills or into the city centre. I agree with Hilary Burrage that a large store would spoil the character of Hope Street. This isn't snobbery, a more upmarket Waitrose would have the same effect. Mrs Burrage's objection...

Finest Achievement ; You Say Email:Letters@Liverpoolecho.Co.Uk

I SEE people painting Hitler moustaches on Obama because they think he is a 'Nazi' for wanting to incorporate social-medicine into America. Let me tell you a story. I was walking in Formby Woods when I got stung by a wasp on my left shoulder blade.

Tory's Comparison of Liverpool to the Wire Is Off the Mark

THE vast majority of Baltimore's good citizens are unlikely to have heard of Speke or Mossside Not that I'm suggesting they are akin to some parts of middle America where people don't own a passport, but the chances of them knowing of specific parts of two UK cities are, let's face it, pretty slim. Nevertheless they might have felt their ears burning this week after Tory shadow minister for Merseyside Chris Grayling compared both areas to Baltimore as portrayed in David Simon's superlative TV...

FINANCE recruitment specialist Sellick Partnership has advised graduates across Merseyside to brush up on their 'soft skills' in order to improve their chances of employability. Research has shown a good qualification is no longer enough to secure a job in the increasingly competitive graduate job market.
